In the past year, I've turned my marketing agency from a side job to my primary source of income. There are a lot of growing pains associated with scaling up your business - you need to maintain your quality of service to retain clients while building your pipeline, network, and list of offerings. I've recently been happy with my companies ability to grow which is primarily due to our ability to document processes and contract out our work while maintaining our quality.

We've spent a lot of time honing our outsourced back office to fulfill orders so that we can focus on scaling up our list of clients. Because of this, we should be able to handle a 400% increase in accounts this year alone.

A big automotive conference in Orlando this April called Digital Dealer is a place where dealers come to talk digital marketing strategy. 

We're looking to unveil a chatbot system we've partnered up on at this conference. So a dealer can purchase the bot and give their audience an instantaneous way to connect - it offers a car trade in valuation, a soft credit pull for instant approval, and so much more. 

We've spent the last 2 months preparing a huge prospecting list and building out our product offerings so we can kill it at this conference. 
As an owner, it's tough to say "lets take a couple weeks or months to prepare for our next move" but with our new offerings and back office fulfillment processes in place, it will be worth it. Obviously chasing immediate sales is the quickest route to making some money - but as an agency owner, I've found you can also drown in opportunity, so taking time to pick your battles is a key to effective scaling.

Building a business as we have is really is all about processes and people/relationships. 

I'd heard it a hundred times while I was at Florida State University studying real estate and entrepreneurship. But no one ever really talks about how to build processes or how to identify the right people you need to talk to. 

In digital marketing, the team with the best-DOCUMENTED strategy wins. 

When you're a one-man show, it's really easy to have the best strategy - you're the only one who needs to know it. The key is in the execution - so you need highly detailed documentation of your plan and how your company works... or else you'll be stuck with just a handful of clients because you can't scale. 

A huge piece of our ability to potentially grow up to 400% this year is based on the fact that we have over a couple hundred page SOP binder so that anyone (whether they're overseas or in our office) who begins working with our company can jump right into the tasks at hand. 

Everything we do from finding prospects to set up campaigns to our chatbot fulfillment processes is well documented and easy to follow.

I'm inspired by my dad whom I started working for after college and has really supported me on this digital marketing journey is number one on my list. 

He's by far the most knowledgable businessman 
I know and definitely motivation behind me working so many hours a week. Outside of him, I'm a huge fan of Grant Cardone and Bezos. 

Cardone because he's literally everywhere - he's one of the few that have found out the secret to brand building in this era, plus, I'm a huge fan of real estate which he's the king of. 

Bezos isn't as loud-mouthed as Cardone, but we (as a society) haven't seen his level of innovation since Steve Jobs.

I’m the VP of Web Strategy at WP Engine and my role is in leading teams supporting WP Engine’s contributions to WordPress Core, supporting technology partners in the WordPress ecosystem, and I am also the StudioPress brand lead within the WP Engine business.

I’ve been in digital since 1996 and have worked both in-house and owned my own WordPress digital agency.

I have experience leading teams building and optimizing digital revenue strategies across a wide variety of industries.

I’m a regular speaker at technology and digital marketing events where I leverage my technical business background to bring marketing insights to nerds and nerd insights to marketers.

--- What are you working on now, and what are some exciting new things in "digital"?

One of the most exciting things I’m working on now are updates to the Genesis framework and StudioPress themes to help make building WordPress sites easier than ever.

Genesis 2.8 (released in January) includes a demo content auto-loader that turns hours or days of setup time loading demo content into minutes.

Using themes built with Genesis 2.8, users can quickly load in demo Gutenberg blocks and requisite plugins for the kind of site they’re building. The Gutenberg blocks are also re-usable, which makes it easier to use elements again and again as site owners continue to evolve.

I’m excited about Genesis 2.8 and the demo content auto-loader as it helps solve “the most annoying problem on the internet”... “My theme doesn’t look anything like the demo!!!”

On digital trends: One of the more interesting and effective things to emerge in the last few years is account based marketing (ABM) or using retargeting and ad networks to get the right ad to the right person or group of people.

Having the power to put ads in market in this way gives marketers the ability to tailor messages and funnels like never before. Additionally, sales teams and marketers are also more tightly connected than ever.

Through ABM, marketing teams can literally help close the deal with direct and exact knowledge of the stage of the deal and perhaps the right information to present.

Of course with the power of ABM comes great responsibility to make sure you’re getting the right level of consent and being on top of your data retention strategies (in various forms depending on geography) in order to drop the pixels to place targeted ads; however, once you master navigating the waters of consent, ABM can be a powerful arrow in your quiver.

--- In your professional journey, David - what are some BIG learned lessons along the way?

Every one of us is on a non-stop mission to spin plates. We spin plates at home keeping things clean or paying our bills. We spin plates at work keeping our inbox clear, or as leaders.. keeping our teams moving in the right direction.

Early in my career as a leader as I moved from team to team spinning my leadership plate I would spend a lot of time teaching people how to spin the plate “perfectly”, rather than working with my teams to figure out the best way to spin the plate.

The result of this approach was that when I returned to the plate later, things had gotten worse. The plates were wobbling and weren’t spinning in the “perfect” way I left them.

The instructions had gotten lost, processes broke down, and the structure I had left experienced entropy as structures tend to do.

After experiencing degraded plate spinning, I got some advice from a few smart friends and changed my approach.

Instead of focusing on how the plates where spinning, I started focusing on how to support my teams at being better plate spinners. What strategies could they come up with to spin the plates in the perfect way?

The result of this approach was that when I came back to the plates, they had actually gotten better! Now there were 3 plates spinning and laser beams keeping the plates from wobbling.

It was incredible. The lesson I learned was that by focusing on helping your teams evolve their strategic thinking and operational execution abilities, you can scale your leadership impact exponentially and help create the next generation of leaders to help push your business forward.

Focus on performance as a product.

How your visitors experience your brand is key to you getting them to open up their wallets, click on your ads, or fill out your lead form.

Just remember that in a world of questions, the fastest answer wins.

A Functional Sales Model

If you are struggling to sell on Facebook and via your ads, it's most likely because you are "forcing your message" to the wrong people, at the wrong time - and only to the top percent of buyers.

What about the "other" folks out there? The ones that don't buy right away? We call these the "96%".  That's going to change the way your business grows. Fast.

A question I get often is this: “How do we best target our Facebook ads”?

The idea that you present a message to a target audience is well known among marketing geeks, but is often not utilized to the fullest degree by business owners.

And, as you’ve seen in my other posts, an established and clear goal must be front and center before starting any ad campaigns.

  • More likes?
  • More comments?
  • More shares?
  • More sales?
  • More leads?
  • More conversions?
  • More content visibility?

These are just a few of the questions to ask as you consider approaching Facebook advertising. You must know where you are going, and determine that the ad platform will reach the audience your are planning for. Google, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube have their own ad platforms too.
